FMI/CMAA Releases the 9th Annual Survey of Owners The focus of the report is on understanding how program- or project-level risks are assessed and managed prior to, or during, project execution (planning through turnover) and how they impact an owner’s overall capital program. FMI analyzed the frequency of occurrence and severity of impact of 32 risks considered strategic, and, more broadly, how owners tend to manage construction risks by electing to either use or not use certain strategies, tactics or processes. |
Owners drive the capital construction process.
It is the owners’ emphasis on innovation that has allowed the construction industry to evolve, continuing to search for solutions that improve the delivery of capital projects. FMI helps owners create efficient capital programs by evaluating performance to strategy, sourcing, project/program management, and execution. We believe that a well-functioning engineering construction organization of an owner is a critical factor to the success of the construction process – whether that organization employs a dozen people or hundreds of people.
Owners that have physical assets which they construct, operate, and maintain fall into this category. The assets could be buildings (vertical), roads (horizontal), or even underground pipes. We use the term “serial builders” to refer to those that have a capital investment program (CAPEX) split between construction and IT spend. An owner’s annual construction CAPEX budget can easily exceed $100MM (US).
Today, it is routine for FMI’s clients to have North American-headquarters with operations and assets both in North America and abroad. FMI has experience in commercial, education, energy & utilities, financial, government (including states & municipalities), healthcare, manufacturing (e.g., automotive, chemical, food, life sciences, oil & gas), military, sports & entertainment, technology and transportation markets.
Faced with reduced staff levels, shorter delivery times, and complex projects, owner organizations are challenged to drive cost, time, and risk out of the construction delivery process. FMI's experienced industry consultants help owners meet these challenges to create a more effective organization and improve communication and collaboration with construction services and materials suppliers. FMI helps owners develop key strategies to improve their capital program delivery process, often with significant cost savings.
